Tshisekedi, Fayulu, Katumbi, Matata Ponyo… the announced candidates for the next presidential elections are looking for their future allies, while uncertainty still hangs over the positioning of Joseph Kabila, Vital Kamerhe and Denis Mukwege.
On paper, 2023 will be an electoral year. General elections have been announced for December 20, with presidential, legislative, provincial and municipal elections to be held on the same day. However, in practice, the specter of a possible postponement of the elections is still looming. The schedule is extremely tight and almost untenable for many observers, but above all the war in the east of the country could deprive a large part of the Congolese population of elections and cause them to be postponed. Uncertainty about whether the election will be held on time is not preventing the Congolese political class from being agitated in all directions… in search of alliances and support. In a one-round presidential election, where President Felix Tshisekedi, candidate for re-election, is the overwhelming favorite, the opposition is trying to unite.
As in 2018, the idea of a single opposition candidate to beat the candidate of the government has resurfaced. An unfortunate experience since Felix Tshisekedi, after having aligned himself behind Martin Fayulu, like Moïse Katumbi and Jean-Pierre Bemba, decided to form a band with Vital Kamerhe.
