Flemish Conservative leader Bart De Wever became Belgium’s new Prime Minister on Monday, February 3. The new prime Minister and his government were sworn in by King Philippe at the Royal Palace this morning.
Bart De Wever has promised to tighten asylum policy and the conditions for obtaining social assistance for exiles, and to reinforce security and the fight against drug trafficking. On the socio-economic front, his coalition intends to “reward work” by limiting entitlement to unemployment benefits for two years.
“And now, let’s get to work!” he wrote on X.

The new coalition succeeds that of liberal Alexander De Croo, in place since October 2020. It marks the return to power of the Neo-Flemish Alliance, already associated with a center-right government between 2014 and 2018. In addition to Theo Francken, another N-VA figure from the 2014-2018 period, former Interior Minister Jan Jambon returns to government. He will be in charge of finance.
