Critical minerals: will India become a new mining giant in the DRC and Zambia?

India is examining the possibility of getting into the extraction of critical minerals in the DRC, Zambia and Australia, according to its Mining Secretary, V.L. Kantha Rao.

The world’s third-largest growing economy intends to secure key raw materials such as lithium.

The Indian Minister of Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, also announced that the Zambian government had recently granted India 9,000 square kilometres to explore for cobalt and copper. At the same time, India is also interested in exploiting minerals in the DRC and Tanzania.

In 2025, the region’s mining sector will still be largely dominated by China.
