Environment: Poor waste management costs the DRC $25 million per month

The Council of Ministers adopted, during its 80th ordinary meeting on February 27, 2026, the National Program for Waste Management and Economic Valorization in the DRC, submitted by the Deputy Minister in charge of the New Climate Economy, Arlette Bahati Tito.

Poor waste management currently costs the country approximately $25 million per month and accounts for 11% of its greenhouse gas emissions, the government indicated, according to the minutes published by the Ministry of Communication and reviewed by M&B Magazine. The program aims to reverse this trend by turning waste into an economic driver. To that end, it targets the creation of 50,000 direct jobs and 150,000 indirect jobs over time.

Placed under the authority of Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, the program will roll out in three phases: an emergency phase over 6 months, a capacity-building phase over 18 months, and an operationalization phase over 24 months. The government intends to use Kinshasa as a pilot city.

A multisectoral task force will be established to launch the emergency phase and coordinate a broad public mobilization for the cleanup of the capital.
