The cobalt market is going through a new period of turbulence. Between July and September 2026, the price of cobalt hydroxide, the main cobalt-bearing product exported by the DRC, fell by 31%. This decline is explained in particular by the return of Congolese volumes to the Chinese market and by fragile demand in batteries.

According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, the price of cobalt hydroxide delivered in Asia stood at 17.25 dollars per pound in the third quarter, or about 38,030 dollars per tonne. Cobalt sulphate also lost nearly 30% in China.

CONGOLESE VOLUMES ON THE RISE

This correction comes as Congolese exports have increased. Chinese imports of cobalt hydroxide from the DRC are reported to have exceeded 10,000 tonnes in June, compared with about 2,000 tonnes in May.

The data show this acceleration: 17,054 tonnes of contained cobalt were exported in the first quarter, then 24,086 tonnes in the second, or 41,140 tonnes in the first half.

This catch-up is linked to the disruptions caused by the new quota regime. After the export embargo, Kinshasa had introduced a cap system in 2025.

For 2026 and 2027, the annual quota is set at 96,600 tonnes, including 87,000 tonnes for producers and 9,600 tonnes of strategic quota under the responsibility of ARECOMS.

A DELICATE BALANCE

The price slump nevertheless reveals the limits of regulation based solely on annual volumes. A simultaneous influx of shipments into a sluggish market can quickly increase pressure on prices.

In August, producers and traders were reluctant to sell below 20 dollars per pound, while Chinese buyers, already supplied, limited their offers.

For the DRC, the challenge now is to balance export volumes, public revenue and market stability. Too abundant a supply could prolong downward pressure.

The fourth quarter will be particularly closely watched. The pace of exports, the use of quotas and Chinese demand will make it possible to measure the effectiveness of the mechanism. For Kinshasa, the issue is to preserve the value of cobalt without worsening the fall in prices.

The Société nationale d’électricité (SNEL SA) and the Turkish company Karpowership have concluded an agreement on the deployment of a power ship with a capacity of 135 MW in Matadi, in Kongo-Central. This new production capacity is intended to contribute to strengthening Kinshasa's electricity supply.

The post DRC: a 135 MW power ship expected in Matadi to strengthen Kinshasa’s electricity supply appeared first on MINING & BUSINESS.

The announcement was made by SNEL’s managing director, Prof. Dr. Ir. Teddy Lwamba, who indicated that the power ship should be delivered to the Democratic Republic of Congo within three weeks. The stated objective is to quickly have additional capacity that can be injected into the national power grid.

According to information communicated by SNEL, this solution aims to meet the capital’s growing electricity needs, as it faces significant demand. The production carried out in Matadi should thus make it possible to strengthen the available supply and, ultimately, improve service to customers in Kinshasa.

Diversifying production sources

For SNEL, the use of this technology is part of an approach to diversify the energy mix. Historically heavily dependent on hydropower, the company is also exploring thermal solutions and other production capacities in order to respond more quickly to the grid’s needs.

The partnership with Karpowership is based on the principle of a floating power plant capable of producing energy near connection infrastructure. The Turkish company, present in several markets around the world, operates a fleet of power ships with a cumulative capacity of several thousand megawatts.

The implementation of the project should notably make it possible to determine the technical arrangements for connection to the grid and the operating conditions of this new capacity. Karpowership for its part affirms its willingness to accelerate the process to allow the first operational stages in the coming months.

With these additional 135 MW envisaged in Matadi, SNEL is thus seeking to rapidly increase its production capacities and to support Kinshasa’s electricity supply, in a context marked by growing energy demand.

A kilogram of cocoa traded at 5.69 US dollars on international markets as of September 21, compared with 5.81 dollars the previous week, a decline of 2.06%. This decrease appears in the price lists of the Ministry of Foreign Trade consulted Tuesday by ACP.

This correction comes after several weeks of increases. From September 7 to 12, the kilo had reached 6.16 dollars, against 5.72 dollars the previous week, a rise of 7.69%. Earlier, from August 17 to 22, it had gone from 5.10 to 5.53 dollars, an increase of 8.43%.

Supply and demand as the driver of prices

The official document attributes these movements of increase, decrease and stability in the prices of marketable mining, agricultural and minor forest products to supply and demand on international markets, as well as to the supply chain.

For the DRC, these fluctuations have a direct impact on an economy heavily dependent on raw material exports. The main cocoa production areas are in North Kivu and Équateur, and the sector generates more than 50 million US dollars per year, according to data from the Central Bank of Congo.

A weekly decline of 2.06% for a product whose annual revenues exceed 50 million dollars illustrates the sensitivity of Congolese exports to world prices.

A Tanzanian company specialising in the assembly, distribution and maintenance of heavy and light vehicles, Saturn Coopération, is studying the opening of a unit in Lubumbashi, in Haut-Katanga, according to a press release seen on Monday by ACP. The announcement follows an official visit by the Congolese Minister of Foreign Trade, Julien Paluku, to the company's factory located in Kigamboni, in the city of Dar es Salaam, in the United Republic of Tanzania, last weekend.

The trip was part of strengthening economic and commercial cooperation between Kinshasa and Dar es Salaam. According to the press release, Julien Paluku encouraged Saturn Coopération, which assembles in particular dump trucks, tankers and tractors of the Howo brand, to invest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

State support highlighted

The minister assured the company’s leaders of the protection and support of the Congolese State, indicating that it could benefit from certain facilities once established on national territory. “The Democratic Republic of the Congo is committed to the continuous improvement of the business climate and intends to offer appropriate support to investors who wish to settle in the country,” he said, quoted in the press release.

Julien Paluku also stressed that the establishment of Saturn Coopération in Lubumbashi would contribute to strengthening the industrial sector and creating jobs, in line with President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo’s commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and employment.

An assembly capacity of 49 vehicles per day

According to Chirag Tanna, one of the managers of Saturn Coopération, the company has an assembly capacity of 49 vehicles per day. Since the inauguration of its factory, 6,000 trucks have already been assembled, with the ambition of reaching 8,000 units in 2027.

The prospect of a unit in Lubumbashi opens a new possibility of industrial cooperation between the DRC and Tanzania, particularly in the sector of vehicles intended for economic activities and transport. The project nevertheless remains at the intention stage at this point, with no date or investment amount having been communicated.
