French humanitarian contribution of €34 million and the sending of emergency freight to Goma with the European Union (9 March 2023) the project will provide humanitarian assistance of €34 million, of which €20 million will be dedicated to the essential needs of the most vulnerable populations in and around Goma. This will be provided in areas such as access to water and sanitation, food security and nutrition, combating maternal and neonatal mortality and assistance to displaced persons. This contribution will be implemented by the United Nations and non-governmental organizations involved in the field.

“For this reason, the EU is rapidly setting up a humanitarian airlift to Goma. The operation, conducted with the support of France as a Team Europe initiative, will provide humanitarian support in the form of medical and nutritional supplies as well as a range of other emergency items, in collaboration with UNICEF and other humanitarian partners,” said an EU statement.

The EU is also providing more than €47 million to be channelled through humanitarian partners to cover immediate needs. An estimated 27 million people are severely food insecure in the DRC. This situation, according to the EU, “is due in particular to the resurgence of violence, conflict and instability in the eastern DRC and significant internal displacement.
