The launch of the modernization works at the Mzée Laurent-Désiré Kabila Market, commonly known as Lusonga, which had been scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2026, has been postponed to a later date.

No new deadline has yet been announced. The decision comes as the relocation of approximately 17,000 vendors continues to raise concerns.

The modernization project at the Mzée Laurent-Désiré Kabila Market will ultimately not begin on the announced date.

According to a source close to the provincial authorities, the launch of the works, initially scheduled for August 20, has simply been postponed, with no new date specified.

The postponement follows several weeks of tensions surrounding the relocation of traders.

Vendors had opposed their relocation to several markets across Lubumbashi, arguing that such dispersion could separate them from their customers and lead to a decline in their income.

Vendors Remain at Mzée Market

Some traders interviewed by Mining and Business Magazine say they have been instructed to continue operating at the Lusonga Market while awaiting the identification of another relocation site.

They also indicate that they have been asked to continue paying taxes related to their commercial activities.

For the time being, this situation allows them to maintain their businesses and avoid a premature closure of the market.

The New School Year Among the Concerns

Other sources close to the matter cite the current economic context as one of the factors behind the postponement.

Provincial authorities reportedly want to give parents more time to prepare for the new school year scheduled to begin in early September.

For traders, this period also represents an important time for household income.

An immediate closure or relocation could therefore further complicate their economic situation.

A New Deadline Awaited

The postponement does not mean that the project has been abandoned.

Provincial authorities maintain their intention to modernize this important commercial infrastructure in Lubumbashi.

What remains to be determined is the new timetable for the works and, above all, the site that will temporarily accommodate the vendors.

With approximately 17,000 traders affected, relocation remains the central issue in the matter.

Pending new instructions, the Mzée Laurent-Désiré Kabila Market continues to operate.

The postponement of the August 20 deadline therefore opens a new period of discussions between the authorities and representatives of the traders.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) does not lack resources, but rather suffers from a lack of coherence between its ambitions and their implementation. This is the assessment of economist Faustin Luanga, who believes that the country must make better use of its agricultural potential and strengthen the skills needed for its transformation.

A Skills Deficit

Faustin Luanga notably points to the insufficient number of engineers and agronomists in relation to the scale of the country’s potential.

According to him, this weakness is an obstacle to the transformation of the agricultural sector, even though the country has vast areas of arable land and significant natural resources.

The economist refers to the presidential promise of the “revenge of the soil over the subsoil,” which was intended to reflect the ambition of making agriculture a pillar of economic development.

However, he believes that this ambition has not been accompanied by a sufficiently significant strengthening of agronomic training.

Learning from Asian Models

Drawing on his experience in Asia, Faustin Luanga compares the DRC’s trajectory with those of Japan, South Korea and the “Asian Tigers,” as well as Ethiopia.

According to him, these countries have demonstrated that development depends less on the abundance of resources than on the ability to organize, plan, and sustain efforts over time.

This experience demonstrates, in his view, the importance of investing in skills, organizing value chains, and ensuring continuity in public policies.

For the DRC, therefore, possessing considerable agricultural and mining potential is not enough: the country must also create the conditions necessary to transform that potential into wealth and jobs.

Institutional Discipline at the Heart of the Challenge

Faustin Luanga ultimately believes that the DRC faces a “problem of institutional discipline.”

Economic sovereignty, he emphasizes, is not measured solely by the possession of natural resources, but also by the State’s ability to implement what has been planned.

From this perspective, better structuring the agricultural sector, strengthening the training of agronomists, and ensuring consistent implementation of public policies appear to be essential conditions for making the “revenge of the soil over the subsoil” a reality.

Kinshasa is welcoming a major innovation in the telecommunications sector. Airtel Africa, in partnership with the American company Starlink, launched a service in Kinshasa on Friday providing satellite connectivity directly to mobile phones. Presented as a first in Africa, the solution aims to strengthen digital coverage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and reduce network dead zones.

The commercial launch of this solution comes in a country characterized by the vastness of its territory and the difficulty of extending conventional telecommunications infrastructure to certain remote areas.

The stated objective of the partners is to eventually contribute to broader digital coverage, including in areas where terrestrial networks remain difficult to deploy.

A Response to Geographical Challenges

Speaking on behalf of Sunil Taldar, CEO of Airtel Africa, who was unable to attend due to health restrictions related to the Ebola virus disease, Thierry Diasnoma, Managing Director of Airtel DRC, welcomed the launch of the new service.

“Airtel Africa, in partnership with Starlink, is proud to launch today a satellite connectivity service for mobile phones, a first in Africa, with the DRC as the first destination,” he said.

According to him, the technology represents an important step in expanding connectivity across the DRC.

It is intended in particular to enable people living, working, or travelling in areas beyond the reach of conventional mobile infrastructure to remain connected.

“Due to the size and geography of our country, many people live, work and travel beyond the reach of conventional mobile infrastructure,” Thierry Diasnoma explained.

A New Asset for the Digital Economy

The satellite service should therefore provide a complementary solution to terrestrial networks, particularly in rural, mining, or difficult-to-access areas.

For companies operating in remote regions, this connectivity could also facilitate communications and certain activities requiring continuous network access.

Airtel and Starlink thus intend to help reduce the digital divide in the DRC, where access to reliable connectivity remains a major challenge for economic and social development.

Beyond telecommunications, the initiative also opens new opportunities for sectors dependent on connectivity, including digital financial services, logistics, education, healthcare, and mining activities.

The DRC is therefore positioning itself as a pioneer market in Africa for this new technology.

More than 120 tonnes of minerals stored at the facilities of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DGDA) in Lubumbashi will soon be auctioned. The operation comes amid efforts to strengthen control over mineral flows and combat fraud in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DGDA) is preparing to organize a major auction of minerals stored at its facilities in Lubumbashi, the capital of Haut-Katanga. According to information reported by ACTUALITE.CD, the volume involved exceeds 120 tonnes.

The operation is taking place in a province at the heart of Congolese mining activity, particularly in the production and marketing of copper and cobalt. It highlights the challenges associated with the control and management of minerals seized, immobilized, or abandoned as part of customs procedures.

An Operation with Economic Significance

The auction is expected to allow the customs administration to regularize the status of the minerals concerned and, where applicable, generate revenue for the Public Treasury.

Beyond its administrative dimension, the operation forms part of the authorities’ efforts to strengthen the traceability of mineral products and combat fraud and smuggling.

Securing mineral flows is indeed a major challenge in ensuring that the country’s natural resources effectively contribute to government revenues.

Transparency at the Heart of the Process

The success of the operation will depend in particular on the transparency of the auction process, from the identification and valuation of the minerals to their allocation to buyers.

In Haut-Katanga, where the mining sector is a major driver of the economy, rigorous management of seized minerals can help strengthen governance in the sector and improve the mobilization of public revenues.

The auction announced by the DGDA will therefore be closely watched by mining operators, traders, and other stakeholders across the value chain.

It could also provide another illustration of the Congolese government’s determination to better control the circulation of mineral products and maximize the economic benefits generated by the country’s natural resources.

With only a few days remaining before the deadline set for the evacuation of the Mzée Laurent-Désiré Kabila Market, traders are showing no signs of backing down. Between August 10 and 15, several vendors once again took to the streets to seek the intervention of provincial lawmakers and civil society organizations. They are particularly opposed to being relocated across several markets in Lubumbashi and are asking for more time to prepare for their move.

The standoff surrounding the Mzée Laurent-Désiré Kabila Market, commonly known as Lusonga, continues. As August 20, 2026 approaches—the date by which vendors are expected to have vacated the site to allow modernization works to begin—traders continue to make their voices heard.

During the week of August 10 to 15, several vendors once again demonstrated in an effort to appeal to provincial lawmakers and various civil society organizations. At the heart of their demands is their opposition to being dispersed across several markets in the city.

Vendors Demand a Single Temporary Site

The provincial government plans to temporarily distribute the traders among four markets: the Ruashi Central Market, Kamalondo Market, Kaseba Market, and Plaine Market in the Kampemba municipality.

The vendors oppose this solution. They argue that such dispersion could disrupt their businesses and, more importantly, separate them from their regular customers.

For these traders, the Mzée Market is a major commercial hub where vendors have built a loyal customer base over the years. Being relocated to different neighborhoods across Lubumbashi therefore raises concerns about a significant decline in turnover.

These concerns are particularly acute because the deadline comes just as the new school year approaches. Many trading families are currently facing significant expenses related to school fees, supplies, and other back-to-school costs.

Vendors Request an Additional Six Months

Speaking to Mining and Business Magazine, some traders proposed an alternative: granting them an additional six months before requiring them to permanently vacate the market.

They argue that this additional time would allow them to better organize themselves financially, prepare for the relocation, and find solutions to preserve both their customer base and their income.

“We are not opposed to the modernization of the market. We are only asking for time to prepare,” one of the vendors interviewed explained.

Other traders are also calling on the authorities to prioritize a single temporary relocation site rather than dispersing them across several markets.

According to them, such an arrangement would help preserve some of the market’s existing commercial dynamics and make it easier for vendors to return once the modernization works are completed.

Authorities Maintain the Deadline

For the authorities, however, clearing the site remains necessary to allow the market modernization project to begin.

The Lubumbashi City Hall is therefore asking traders to comply with the August 20 deadline.

The provincial government had announced the temporary relocation of vendors to the markets of Ruashi, Kamalondo, Kaseba, and Plaine. The stated objective is to allow construction work to proceed while maintaining commercial activities at different locations across the city.

Between Modernization and Economic Survival

With approximately 17,000 vendors affected, the issue now extends far beyond the reconstruction of a single market. It also raises the question of how to protect the economic activities of thousands of small traders whose daily income depends heavily on their location.

With only a few days remaining before August 20, provincial authorities and vendor representatives therefore face a major challenge: finding a balance between the urgent need to modernize a strategic commercial infrastructure for Lubumbashi and the need to preserve traders’ livelihoods during the transition period.

The ability of both sides to resume dialogue could determine what happens next, as the deadline approaches and opposition remains strong on the ground.
