DRC: AfDB Paves the Way for Three Projects That Could Transform Transport and Mining Logistics
The African Development Bank (AfDB) intends to strengthen its technical support to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the preparation of three major projects: the Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge, the Lobito Corridor, and MetroKin. This support could accelerate the development of these infrastructure projects and move them toward the financing and implementation phases.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo wants to accelerate the implementation of several strategic infrastructure projects with the support of its development partners. Among the priority projects are the Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge, the Lobito Corridor, and MetroKin, for which the African Development Bank plans to provide technical assistance.
This commitment was discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka and an AfDB delegation led by Régis Lakoue Derant, the institution’s Executive Director for Central African countries. Discussions focused in particular on the progress of the three projects and the different forms of support that the pan-African bank could provide to the Congolese authorities.
Accelerating Project Development
The AfDB’s involvement will not be limited to financing infrastructure. The institution also plans to support preparatory studies, mobilize experts, and assist in advancing the projects.
This stage will help determine their technical and financial feasibility, assess their environmental and social impacts, and clarify the legal and institutional mechanisms required for their implementation.
“We have three projects that are being prepared and that we need to finance, including the Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge, the Lobito Corridor and MetroKin,” said Régis Lakoue Derant, as quoted by the Prime Minister’s Office.
For the DRC, this support represents an important opportunity. The quality of the studies and the structuring of the projects will determine their ability to mobilize the public and private financing required for their implementation.
A Major Issue for the Mining Sector
The Lobito Corridor occupies a particularly important place in this strategy. Connecting the mining regions of the DRC and Zambia to the Angolan port of Lobito, this route is expected to facilitate the transportation of goods to international markets.
For the Congolese mining industry, improving transport infrastructure is an essential factor in competitiveness. More efficient logistics could help reduce the time and costs involved in transporting minerals while providing operators with a strategic alternative for their exports.
The development of the Lobito Corridor is therefore part of a broader effort to strengthen regional integration and diversify the DRC’s access routes to international markets.
Connecting the Capitals and Improving Mobility in Kinshasa
The Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge addresses another strategic challenge: strengthening connectivity between the DRC and the Republic of the Congo. This infrastructure is intended to establish a permanent link between the two capitals, which are currently connected mainly by river.
MetroKin, meanwhile, aims to address mobility challenges in the Congolese capital. With a growing population and increasing traffic congestion, developing a structured urban transport system has become a major issue for Kinshasa’s economy.
Prime Minister Judith Suminwa reaffirmed the government’s willingness to continue working with the AfDB to accelerate the implementation of these projects.
For the DRC, the next challenge will be to turn the announced technical assistance into sufficiently mature and bankable projects capable of attracting the necessary financing. Beyond infrastructure itself, their implementation could strengthen mobility, regional connectivity, and the country’s logistical competitiveness.
