Lualaba: Three New Artisanal Mining Zones Made Viable in Lubudi

According to Moïse Ilunga, a representative of a mining cooperative, these sites were found following a field visit. He indicated that the approach responded to a concern expressed by the inhabitants of Lubudi, and that these zones had been placed at their disposal by the government.

**An operation supervised by the province and the Ministry of Mines**

During this meeting, the governor presented the progress made, including the identification, provision, and making viable of several ZEAs intended for the heads of mining cooperatives in Lubudi. Two maps allowing visualization of the identified areas were also handed over to the provincial authority by the experts. These documents will serve as a working basis for the next stage of the process of developing and making the zones viable.

**An initiative presented as beneficial for miners**

Fifi Masuka specified that this initiative by President Félix Tshisekedi aims to allow artisanal miners to carry out their activities under better organized conditions likely to help improve their living conditions. She described these workers as great workers.

**Scope for Lualaba**

Lualaba is a leading mining province in the DRC, where artisanal mining occupies an important place in the local economy. The provision of supervised ZEAs is part of a dynamic of formalizing the sector, with issues of traceability, taxation, and working conditions for diggers.
