The figures were announced on Wednesday, 30 September 2026 by China’s ambassador to the DRC, Zhao Bin, during a press conference held on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The diplomat presented these results as a “new summit” in bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

A progression driven by minerals

The 2026 performance comes as trade between the two countries had exceeded 17.2 billion dollars in the first eight months of 2025, according to data presented last year by the same diplomat. In just seven months, the volume recorded this year has therefore already passed the 19 billion dollar threshold.

The Congolese trade surplus, estimated at 10.6 billion dollars, rests mainly on mining exports. China remains a major outlet for copper and cobalt produced in the DRC, two strategic resources for industrial chains linked in particular to batteries and electric vehicles.

According to Zhao Bin, the DRC remains the leading destination for Chinese investments in Africa and is among Beijing’s three main trading partners on the continent. He also states that Chinese companies created more than 120,000 direct jobs in the DRC in 2025 and contributed more than 4 billion dollars to tax revenues. These figures have not, however, been confirmed by independent Congolese sources.

Beijing encourages diversification

Since 1 May 2026, China has applied a zero-tariff regime to several products originating from 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, including the DRC. Beijing is thus encouraging Kinshasa to increase its non-mining exports to the Chinese market.

For the DRC, the challenge now is to derive more value from this trade relationship. Dependence on minerals exposes the economy to fluctuations in international prices and to the concentration of outlets. The local processing of copper and cobalt, as well as the diversification of exports, therefore remain at the heart of the challenge of converting these trade records into added value and sustainable jobs.

Beyond mining exports

In New York, on the occasion of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa defended this orientation, presenting the Lobito Corridor as a tool for regional industrialization. For the Congolese government, the challenge is to make the rail more than a route for evacuating minerals to the Atlantic Ocean.

A corridor serving industry

The vision is based on the development of an ecosystem combining transport, energy, industry, agriculture and trade. Kinshasa notably wishes to promote the establishment of industrial activities along the corridor so that a larger share of the value derived from mining resources is created locally.

Rehabilitation of the railway network

The Congolese component of the project provides for the rehabilitation and development of the rail axis linking in particular Kolwezi, Lubumbashi and Sakania, with a connection to the west of the country. In July 2026, the government had adopted a public-private partnership project dedicated to the development of this infrastructure.

In August, the DRC and Mota-Engil Africa also signed a collaboration agreement and a railway concession contract covering the Dilolo-Sakania axis.

Creating more value in the DRC

For Kinshasa, improved connectivity must accompany investments in energy, industrial infrastructure and value chains related to copper, cobalt and other strategic minerals.

The Lobito Corridor is thus called upon to support the development of regional value chains, particularly in the sectors of transition minerals, batteries and new industries.

The challenge of implementation

Financing, the effective rehabilitation of infrastructure, energy availability and the attractiveness of the business climate remain decisive. For the DRC, the challenge will be to transform rail investments into productive activities and jobs, so that the Lobito Corridor is not only an export route, but also a tool for industrialization.

In Manono territory, Tanganyika Province, the photovoltaic power plant commissioned in 2018 is facing another breakdown that is disrupting the electricity supply.

The situation is once again raising questions about the reliability and maintenance of energy storage infrastructure in isolated electricity networks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A System Dependent on Storage

Commissioned by Congo Energy, a subsidiary of the Forrest Group, the Manono solar power plant supplies an isolated grid operated by the National Electricity Company (SNEL).

Its system includes a battery bank with a capacity of approximately 3 MWh, designed to store the energy generated during the day.

This storage system plays an essential role in ensuring continuity of electricity supply. In particular, it makes it possible to maintain power supply at night or when sunlight is insufficient.

The plant was designed to meet the energy needs of the local population. During the first phase of the project, the objective was to serve approximately 600 subscribers, with 250 connections. The second phase was expected to increase the number of prepaid meters to 350.

Problems Had Already Been Reported

The current breakdown comes after the plant had already experienced problems related to its batteries.

In May 2025, difficulties affecting the storage system had notably been reported, with consequences for Manono’s electricity supply.

The recurrence of these incidents highlights the importance of battery maintenance and replacement in solar installations equipped with storage systems.

While photovoltaic panels generate electricity during daylight hours, storage capacity directly determines the availability of electricity outside these periods.

A Major Issue for a Region with Mining Potential

Beyond household needs, the energy issue is particularly important for Manono, a territory with significant mining potential, particularly in lithium.

Reliable electricity supply is indeed a determining factor in supporting the economic and industrial development of a region expected to attract more investment.

The breakdown of the solar power plant therefore serves as a reminder that the deployment of renewable energy in the DRC must be accompanied by a sustainable strategy for maintenance, equipment replacement, and the security of storage systems.

For Manono, restoring the plant to service and improving its reliability appear essential both for households and for the economic activities expected to develop in the territory.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) intends to strengthen its technical support to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the preparation of three major projects: the Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge, the Lobito Corridor, and MetroKin. This support could accelerate the development of these infrastructure projects and move them toward the financing and implementation phases.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo wants to accelerate the implementation of several strategic infrastructure projects with the support of its development partners. Among the priority projects are the Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge, the Lobito Corridor, and MetroKin, for which the African Development Bank plans to provide technical assistance.

This commitment was discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka and an AfDB delegation led by Régis Lakoue Derant, the institution’s Executive Director for Central African countries. Discussions focused in particular on the progress of the three projects and the different forms of support that the pan-African bank could provide to the Congolese authorities.

Accelerating Project Development

The AfDB’s involvement will not be limited to financing infrastructure. The institution also plans to support preparatory studies, mobilize experts, and assist in advancing the projects.

This stage will help determine their technical and financial feasibility, assess their environmental and social impacts, and clarify the legal and institutional mechanisms required for their implementation.

“We have three projects that are being prepared and that we need to finance, including the Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge, the Lobito Corridor and MetroKin,” said Régis Lakoue Derant, as quoted by the Prime Minister’s Office.

For the DRC, this support represents an important opportunity. The quality of the studies and the structuring of the projects will determine their ability to mobilize the public and private financing required for their implementation.

A Major Issue for the Mining Sector

The Lobito Corridor occupies a particularly important place in this strategy. Connecting the mining regions of the DRC and Zambia to the Angolan port of Lobito, this route is expected to facilitate the transportation of goods to international markets.

For the Congolese mining industry, improving transport infrastructure is an essential factor in competitiveness. More efficient logistics could help reduce the time and costs involved in transporting minerals while providing operators with a strategic alternative for their exports.

The development of the Lobito Corridor is therefore part of a broader effort to strengthen regional integration and diversify the DRC’s access routes to international markets.

Connecting the Capitals and Improving Mobility in Kinshasa

The Kinshasa-Brazzaville road-rail bridge addresses another strategic challenge: strengthening connectivity between the DRC and the Republic of the Congo. This infrastructure is intended to establish a permanent link between the two capitals, which are currently connected mainly by river.

MetroKin, meanwhile, aims to address mobility challenges in the Congolese capital. With a growing population and increasing traffic congestion, developing a structured urban transport system has become a major issue for Kinshasa’s economy.

Prime Minister Judith Suminwa reaffirmed the government’s willingness to continue working with the AfDB to accelerate the implementation of these projects.

For the DRC, the next challenge will be to turn the announced technical assistance into sufficiently mature and bankable projects capable of attracting the necessary financing. Beyond infrastructure itself, their implementation could strengthen mobility, regional connectivity, and the country’s logistical competitiveness.

Air Congo is continuing the expansion of its domestic network. The national airline inaugurated, on Friday, July 10, its first regular service between Kinshasa and Muanda, in Kongo-Central Province. This new route, operated once a week, is seen as a lever for the economic, tourism and commercial development of this strategic coastal city.

A New Boost for Muanda

After several years of waiting, the people of Muanda have welcomed Air Congo’s arrival with satisfaction. This new air connection now makes it possible to link Kinshasa to Muanda in less than one hour, compared with several hours by road, offering travelers a considerable time saving.

For Samy Phoba, a resident of Muanda, this inauguration marks an important step. He hopes that the route will be maintained over time and that its frequency will be increased in order to meet growing demand from users.

An Asset for the Local Economy

Local authorities see this service as a tool for opening up the area and accelerating development. The territorial administrator of Muanda, Amina Panda Kani, stressed that this connection will facilitate the movement of people, economic operators and investors.

Beyond passenger transport, this air connection should also stimulate commercial exchanges, promote tourism-related activities and improve access to administrative and economic services between Kinshasa and Muanda.

A Strategy to Expand the National Network

With the opening of this route, Air Congo confirms its ambition to strengthen domestic service and bring the country’s main cities closer together. This initiative is part of a broader dynamic to modernize national air transport, just a few days after the launch of its international route to Brussels.

The company thus intends to contribute to better mobility of people and goods, while supporting the government’s efforts to improve the economic integration of the national territory. The Kinshasa–Muanda route, scheduled every Friday, represents a new step in this strategy to reclaim Congolese skies and develop transport infrastructure.
