Fifi Masuka: “Lualaba is establishing itself as the world’s cobalt capital”
Lualaba Province is strengthening its position as one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s key economic engines. Speaking at the Katanga Business Meeting (KBM), Governor Fifi Masuka outlined her long-term vision for transforming the province through mining, industrialization and economic diversification.
A strategic mining province
According to Governor Masuka, Lualaba has always played a strategic role in the Congolese economy.
Rich in critical minerals essential to the global energy transition, the province has evolved into one of the world’s leading mining regions, attracting major international mining companies and large-scale investments.
Becoming the world’s cobalt capital
Masuka believes Lualaba has firmly established itself as the world’s cobalt capital.
She also highlighted flagship projects such as Kamoa-Kakula, which is expected to become one of Africa’s largest copper producers once it reaches full production.
Combined with the development of the Lobito Corridor, these projects are strengthening the province’s role as a regional logistics and mining hub.
Turning mineral wealth into sustainable development
The Governor stressed that mineral resources should serve as a catalyst for broader economic development rather than being an end in themselves.
Through the Mining Code, mining companies contribute to community development projects via royalties and dedicated development funds, helping finance local infrastructure and public services.
Promoting local value addition
A key priority for the provincial government is expanding domestic mineral processing.
Rather than exporting raw or semi-processed minerals, Masuka wants to encourage industrial transformation within the DRC to generate greater value, create skilled jobs and strengthen the country’s industrial base.
Diversifying the provincial economy
While mining remains the backbone of Lualaba’s economy, the Governor believes long-term prosperity depends on diversification.
Agriculture, tourism and sports are among the sectors identified to complement mining and build a more resilient provincial economy.
Inspiring the next generation of women leaders
Masuka concluded by encouraging young Congolese and African women to believe in their abilities and pursue leadership opportunities without limiting their ambitions.
She emphasized that success is possible across public service, business, entrepreneurship and civil society, provided determination, discipline and commitment remain at the center of one’s journey
