Congolese Cocoa Falls to USD 5.69 per Kilo on International Markets

A kilogram of cocoa traded at 5.69 US dollars on international markets as of September 21, compared with 5.81 dollars the previous week, a decline of 2.06%. This decrease appears in the price lists of the Ministry of Foreign Trade consulted Tuesday by ACP.

This correction comes after several weeks of increases. From September 7 to 12, the kilo had reached 6.16 dollars, against 5.72 dollars the previous week, a rise of 7.69%. Earlier, from August 17 to 22, it had gone from 5.10 to 5.53 dollars, an increase of 8.43%.

Supply and demand as the driver of prices

The official document attributes these movements of increase, decrease and stability in the prices of marketable mining, agricultural and minor forest products to supply and demand on international markets, as well as to the supply chain.

For the DRC, these fluctuations have a direct impact on an economy heavily dependent on raw material exports. The main cocoa production areas are in North Kivu and Équateur, and the sector generates more than 50 million US dollars per year, according to data from the Central Bank of Congo.

A weekly decline of 2.06% for a product whose annual revenues exceed 50 million dollars illustrates the sensitivity of Congolese exports to world prices.
