DRC prepares launch of RGPH-2 census mapping in Kinshasa

The National Institute of Statistics (INS) brought together Kinshasa's burgomasters and neighborhood chiefs ahead of the second General Population and Housing Census (RGPH-2), during an awareness-raising session held in the capital. The INS Director General, Elysée Chovu, asked these local authorities to secure the personnel and equipment and to prevent possible difficulties in the field.

A national planning challenge

According to Elysée Chovu, RGPH-2 must provide the Democratic Republic of Congo with reliable and up-to-date data on population numbers, geographic distribution and characteristics. This information is intended to inform the planning of development policies and programs.

The INS Director General presented the burgomasters and neighborhood chiefs as grassroots relays, given their knowledge of the neighborhoods, avenues and realities of their communities.

Confidentiality and inclusion of vulnerable people

Elysée Chovu assured the population that the information collected will remain confidential. She also invited local authorities to pay particular attention to elderly people, persons living with disabilities and isolated persons, so that their participation in the operation is guaranteed.

The burgomasters and neighborhood chiefs present expressed their willingness to support RGPH-2 and to raise awareness among the population.

Next steps

An official ceremony to launch the census mapping work in the city-province of Kinshasa is planned for September 28, before the deployment of teams. A door-to-door collection from households is scheduled to gather the data needed to prepare the main phase of the census.
