Ebola: WHO Confident in the DRC’s Ability to Contain the New Outbreak

A Reassuring Message from the WHO Chief
According to World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Democratic Republic of Congo has all the necessary strengths to respond to the new Ebola outbreak.
“The DRC has solid experience in fighting Ebola, having already controlled several outbreaks in the past. We are confident that it will be able to contain this new outbreak,” he said after a meeting with Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka.
Assessment of the Ongoing Response
The meeting between the Congolese head of government and the WHO chief took place in a context marked by the mobilization of health authorities following the emergence of new Ebola cases.
The two officials reviewed the actions already undertaken to contain the disease and protect affected populations.
The discussions also focused on assessing the response currently deployed on the ground, as well as the challenges that must be addressed to prevent a wider spread of the outbreak.
Strengthened Cooperation
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the strengthening of cooperation between the WHO and the DRC.
The discussions covered technical support mechanisms, epidemiological surveillance, prevention, and care for affected people.
For both the Congolese government and the WHO, the fight against Ebola requires permanent coordination between national authorities, international partners, and local communities in order to ensure a rapid and effective response.
Building on Acquired Experience
The DRC is one of the countries with the greatest experience in managing Ebola outbreaks.
In recent years, several outbreaks have been brought under control thanks to the mobilization of medical teams, vaccination campaigns, strengthened screening, and community involvement.
This expertise is now a major asset in responding to the current situation. It allows health authorities to rely on proven mechanisms to quickly detect cases, limit transmission chains, and provide appropriate care for patients.
Toward a More Resilient Health System
Beyond the immediate response to the outbreak, Judith Suminwa Tuluka and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also discussed strategies aimed at sustainably strengthening the Congolese health system.
The objective is to consolidate national capacities in order to better prevent and manage future health emergencies.
This meeting therefore reflects the shared commitment of the Congolese government and the WHO to continue efforts to protect populations and strengthen the resilience of the health system in the face of epidemic threats.
