DRC: Kinshasa Brings the Debate on Global Governance of Natural Resources to the UN
The Democratic Republic of Congo is using its presidency of the United Nations Security Council to lead an in-depth debate on the governance of natural resources. In New York, the Congolese government launched an international reflection aimed at making mineral resources a factor of peace, security and shared prosperity.
A High-Level Diplomatic Initiative
Chaired by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, the meeting organized under the “Arria” formula brings together members of the Security Council, UN member states, regional organizations, international partners, civil society, academia and the private sector.
Toward a More Coherent International Framework
Under the theme “The normative gap concerning natural resources and peace: foundations and perspectives,” the DRC believes that current mechanisms for traceability, due diligence and the fight against conflict financing remain insufficiently coordinated. It is calling for a more coherent international framework to better connect natural resource governance, conflict prevention and security.
Critical Minerals at the Heart of the Issues
In a context of growing global demand for critical minerals, which are essential to the energy transition, Kinshasa is defending an approach based on transparency, shared responsibility and a fairer distribution of benefits between producing states and supply chain actors.
Heading Toward the July 22 Debate
This meeting prepares the high-level public debate of July 22, 2026, which will be chaired by President Félix Tshisekedi at the United Nations Security Council. The DRC intends to promote global governance of natural resources capable of strengthening peace, attracting responsible investment and supporting sustainable development.
